Mr. Justice Indrajit
Mahanty
Mr. Justice Indrajit Mahanty was born on 11.11.1960 in the illustrious
family of Late Madhusudan Mahanty. Being the eldest son of Late
Barrister Ranjit Mahanty and mother Advocate Shakuntala Mahanty, he has
a natural internal instinct towards the legal profession, which he
showed at a very young age. After his schooling at the famous Mount
Hermon School, Darjeeling, he graduated from the Ravenshaw College. He
obtained his LLB degree from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and
after securing 1st Divn. in LLB he did his LLM in University of
Cambridge, England and came out in flying colours having 1st Divn. to
his credit.
After enrolment as an advocate, he practiced in the field of Commercial
Law, Arbitration, taxation, Civil, Criminal, and Constitutional besides
Service Law in various District level Courts, High Courts and in the
Supreme Court of India. He has the rare distinction of conducting cases
in different International Forums also.
Like his illustrious father who was involved in many social activities
& mother who is actively associated with different welfare
activities for the poor & downtrodden in the society,
hislordship’s activities were never limited to the legal profession
only. In spite of his work pressure, he could devote time for social
cause also. His involvement as a Member of Board of Governors at Mount
Hermon school, Darjeeling from1997-99, at NALSAR from 2000-02, at
National Law School of India University (Bangalore) from 2000-2003 and
at Lawrence School (Lovedale) Ooty from 2002 to till his elevation are
rare testimony of his immense interest in overall development of the
standard of education and training in the Country.
Mr. Justice Mahanty has the rare distinction of being a member of Orissa
State Bar Council continuously from 1989 to till his elevation as a
Judge. He has also to his credit the laurel of being the Member of Bar
Council of India from 1998 to 2003 as well as the Managing Trustee of
the Bar Council of India Trust for the year 2003. He was also the Member
of the Press Council of India from 2001 to 2004.
